What is a NERB? The North East Rod Builders are a group of custom fishing rod builders who share a passion for the artistic aspect of the craft. While there are many mediums to express yourself artistically on a fishing rod, most NERBs primarily focus on using embroidery threads to create an intricate design by wrapping them in a specific pattern. The patterns are called Decorative Wraps and Weaves. However, there are several NERBs excelling at other artistic aspects of the craft such as grip work using wood, exotic wood & horn, foam and cork.
How do I become a NERB? Unlike most clubs for groups, there is nothing is required to become a NERB. No dues, no scheduled monthly meetings in a hall, no magazine, no secret handshake at the door. NERBs are a state of mind: if you genuinely enjoy building the best rod you can, sharing info with others, and find yourself consumed with doing things better - you are already a NERB. To "officially" become a NERB, send an e-mail to Billy Vivona and ask to be NERB'd.
What do I get out of becoming a NERB? Exactly what you put in. Since nothing is required - what makes the NERBs special are the members who push each other higher & higher and further & further away from "The Box". Each member puts forth a great deal of pride in our work, and it shows in the final result when that last coat of epoxy is put on the rod. Currently, there is an electronic newsletter sent out 4 times per year which updates members on upcoming NERB events, but will also share new techniques, components, and sometimes a funny story. There are local Gatherings held at member's homes & shops for between 5-20 builders a few times per year. To date, there have been Gatherings in NJ, NY, Massachusetts, and Chicago, and we are always looking for new locations.
How can I contribute to the NERBs? If you have an idea for a Gathering location, any information you would like to share, or an idea to make this website better - let us know. The only way for the NERB state of mind will grow, is by the members getting involved and making it grow.
